Sisanda Labs is a virtual science lab app that allows learners to perform science experiments using simulations.
Context
In South Africa, approximately 80% of public schools lack access to science laboratories according to the Section 27 Basic Education Handbook. This significant gap in educational infrastructure means that many students are taught to imagine scientific concepts rather than experience them firsthand, merely. This theoretical approach to science education limits students’ understanding and enthusiasm for scientific subjects, potentially hampering their future academic and career opportunities in STEM fields.
Approach
To address this challenge, we developed Sisanda Labs, a virtual science laboratory application specifically aligned with the South African curriculum. The platform encompasses comprehensive simulations across Natural Science and Technology, Physical Science, and Life Sciences—covering the full spectrum of required scientific experimentation in the national education system.
The application utilizes detailed 3D objects and dynamic animations to demonstrate experiments to learners intuitively and engagingly. We prioritized 3D visualization as our primary approach, with Augmented Reality capabilities incorporated as an enhanced feature for compatible devices. This tiered technology approach ensures accessibility across various device capabilities while still providing an immersive learning experience for all users.
Output
The Sisanda Labs virtual science lab app enables learners to conduct scientific experiments through interactive simulations, providing a hands-on learning experience despite physical laboratory constraints. The app is scheduled for deployment in the City of Umhlathuze in 2025, marking its first major institutional implementation. To maximize accessibility, we’ve also made Sisanda Labs publicly available through the Google Play store.
This project remains in active development, with continuous improvements and additional features planned. The portfolio page will be regularly updated to showcase new functionality, expanded curriculum coverage, and implementation milestones as they occur.
