What are Testes?

Testes, also known as testicles, are two oval-shaped organs located in the scrotum, outside the abdominal cavity. They play a crucial role in the male reproductive system.

Functions

Sperm Production: Testes produce sperm through a process called spermatogenesis.

Hormone Production: Testes produce testosterone, a hormone essential for male development, growth, and reproductive processes.

Storage: Testes store sperm until they mature and are released.

Structure

Tunica Albuginea: A tough, fibrous layer covering the testes.

Septula Testis: A thin membrane dividing the testes into compartments.

Seminiferous Tubules: Tiny tubes where sperm production occurs.

Leydig Cells: Cells that produce testosterone.

Interesting Facts

  • Testes are outside the abdominal cavity to maintain a cooler temperature (around 2°C lower) for optimal sperm production.
  • The testes produce over 500 billion sperm in a lifetime!
  • Testosterone produced by the testes regulates male characteristics, such as facial hair, deep voice, and muscle mass.
